Many industries measure gloss using a coatings gloss meter to ensure the quality of their products. It has been shown that the gloss level of a product has as much psychological impact on a consumer as its color. Many products are designed with combinations of high gloss and matt finishes, maximizing their customer appeal.

Surface quality can often be assessed by measuring gloss. For example poorly cured paints or coatings can exhibit unusual gloss levels and can lead to chipping and flaking at a later stage in manufacture.

Most paints and coatings are gloss controlled from formulation, checked regularly with a coatings gloss meter during manufacture and finally during application. Changes in gloss levels anywhere in this process can lead to substantial visual differences in batches offered to the end user. Closely controlling gloss means products are produced with maximum visual impact and rejections are avoided.

A Robust Non-Contact Process Gloss Meter is also available from us built to tight NEMA standards. The non-contact gloss meter can be used on paper machines, glass lines, vinyl siding lines, super calenders, and any flat product process lines.

The protective coatings industry monitors gloss during the lifetime of a coating by using a BYK Gardner or Novo Gloss meter because as the paint ages its gloss level drops. When it reaches a preset level the structure is re-painted ensuring that a maximum lifespan is achieved from the coating without the risk of corroding the structure it protects.

Paints, plastic, and coatings are primarily controlled using the 60 degree paint gloss meter geometry, with the additional 20 and 85 degree geometries for high gloss and matt coatings.

The car industry invests in delivering products with gloss levels that have maximum appeal to end customers. Gloss levels vary from mirror finish chrome parts to very matt "soft touch" internal plastics.

High gloss finish paints for bodywork are controlled for gloss using the 20 degree angle paint gloss meter. Mid-gloss plastic and wood finishes are controlled using the 60 degree geometry and matt interior plastics using the 85 degree glossmeter.

If you require a paint gloss meter, you can choose from the English Novo Gloss LITE 60 degree or the more expensive German BYK Gardner 60 degree glossmeter. Unfortunately we do not have gloss meters made in U.S.A. or Canada.

Perhaps your products range from a low gloss or mat appearance to a medium gloss, then you would choose a dual type gloss meter such as the Novo Gloss Lite 20-60 Dual gloss meter. If you also produce a very high gloss, then choose a triple angle paint gloss meter that measures all three angles simultaneously.

You can choose from the Novo Gloss TRIO or the Micro Tri-Gloss glossmeter.

The three angles of our 20/60/85 degree Novo Gloss TRIO glossmeter or the BYK Tri-Gloss meter give maximum flexibility with improved resolution on both matt and high gloss stone finishes.

The built-in statistical analysis feature is often used to control the variation in batches; the readings are then downloaded and stored in our gloss meter software as part of the end users quality system. This software is included as part of our kits.
